Uterine Fibroids: What You Need to Know

It’s Uterine Fibroid Awareness Day! So let’s talk about it.

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They are relatively common, affecting millions worldwide. These benign tumors can vary in size, ranging from small, undetectable ones to large masses that can distort the shape of the uterus. Fibroids have been associated with various reproductive health issues from heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain, to infertility and painful sex.

For some people, uterine fibroids may cause no symptoms, but between 25-50% of cases are symptomatic and can significantly affect one’s quality of life. Here are some of the common symptoms:

  • Heavy bleeding or painful periods
  • Anemia
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Feeling “full” in the lower abdomen (a.k.a pelvic pressure)
  • Frequent urination
  • Pain during sex
  • Lower back pain
  • Fertility challenges

As you know by now, I love talking about the areas of our health that are oftentimes overlooked, and with fibroids sexual health is something that can be impacted but not always talked about.

The location and size of the fibroids can cause discomfort or pain during penetration, known as dyspareunia. This discomfort can stem from pressure on the surrounding organs, such as the bladder or rectum, or from the fibroids interfering with the natural movement of the uterus and cervix during sexual activity. Some people also notice bleeding after sex. On top of the physical changes, the emotional and psychological impact of living with uterine fibroids can contribute to decreased sexual desire or intimacy issues, potentially impacting relationship satisfaction as well.

Folks with uterine fibroids are dealing with a complex interplay of physical, emotional and mental challenges impacting their quality of life. So what can you do about it?

A Naturopathic Approach to Uterine fibroids

When it comes to managing uterine fibroids, naturopathic medicine offers various approaches that focus on managing symptoms while focusing on the underlying mechanisms behind the condition. Here are some key strategies:

  1. Hormone care: Fibroids are considered estrogen dependent, since there have been no reports of cases pre-puberty and they tend to regress after menopause and on medications that inhibit estrogen production. Progesterone also plays a role in the development and progression of fibroids. As a naturopathic doctor, considering symptoms and the appropriate lab tests, we may utilize various treatments to address your hormones which may involve herbs, supplements, nutritional support, and lifestyle modifications.
  2. Diet and nutrition: Reducing oxidative stress and inflammation is a key aspect of treating fibroids. A nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet can support optimal hormone regulation and reduce inflammation associated with fibroids. A diet low in antioxidants and fiber has been associated with uterine fibroids. Focusing on incorporating whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats while minimizing processed foods and refined sugars can be beneficial.
  3. Environmental exposures: Exposure to heavy metals, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and smoking, have been associated with uterine fibroids. With EDCs specifically, they can stimulate these receptors and alter the function or production of our natural hormones which have been associated with uterine fibroids.
  4. Stress management: There is a two-way relationship between fibroids and stress. While stress can exacerbate hormonal imbalances and worsen fibroid symptoms, it is also a clear outcome of having fibroids. Incorporating stress-reducing practices like meditation, yoga, or acupuncture into your routine can promote emotional well-being and potentially alleviate symptoms.

Uterine fibroids can significantly impact one’s quality of life. Remember, each individual’s experience with uterine fibroids is unique, so it’s important to have a personalized treatment plan that suits your specific needs. By prioritizing your well-being and taking an integrative approach, you can navigate the challenges posed by uterine fibroids, promote optimal menstrual and sexual health, and enhance your overall quality of life.

    1. Such a great question! This is something that is very individualized as some herbs may not be safe for each person. This is where a practitioner able to tailor your plan to you is essential. We can use herbs to treat inflammation, insulin resistance, hormone irregularities etc. which can all help depending on the person.
